Book Review Of The Mortal Instruments Book Series By Cassandra Clare

The Mortal Instruments Book Series

I found The Mortal Instruments Series was quite very interesting, irregular but very creative. The series is a paranormal romance/urban fantasy novel for young & older adults.
A short plot summary of the book series start with a Fifteen-year-old girl called Clary Fray, she is at a club called the Pandemonium with her best friend, Simon. There, she sees a crowd of strangely behaving, but attractive teens sneak into a storeroom. She follows them and witnesses them murder a demon which from then on discovers that they’re demon hunters. Once she gets away from the club she receives a scary phone call from her Mum that sounds like she’s being attacked. The first book focuses on Clary learning who she really is, why her mother was always over protective of her and discovering the world of shadow hunters, werewolves, vampires and demons.

Character Profile

Clary Fairchild: Clary is the main character of the books. She is very stubborn and sarcastic, she never does what she is told however its because she’s determined to set everything right and save her closest friends and family. She is quite reckless at times, putting herself in danger and taking risks but she’s caring and compassionate.

Jace Wayland: Jace Is the main male character in the series. He is very sarcastic, arrogant, self-centred and overconfident. He has always been independent and is very good at his job which is killing demons. However behind that cocky image he is also seen as being protective, possessive and passionate.

Simon: Clary’s Best friend; he is very geeky, cute and witty. He has been Clary’s friend since childhood and he grew to be in love with her however she see’s him as her best friend.

Isabelle: The bitchy hot chick Clary hates. She is portrayed as the cold hearted girl but soon everyone realises she is sensitive, mature and not cold hearted like everyone thinks. I actually kind of liked her.

Alec: Isabelle’s older brother. He is mature, blunt and straightforward.  He is protective of Jace and his Sister and has a strong set of Morals.

Valentine: The bad guy who is trying to run the whole shadow hunter world.

What I liked about the Book Series.
– The action sequences were written well. I could visualize what was  happening.
–  The idea of a Shadow Hunter world is very creative and unique
– The Twists in the books were unexpecting

I found the Mortal Instruments Series very mystical, fascinating and riveting. I found the whole concept of a shadow world very unique. I thought I would find this series childish as Clary is 15 at the start of the book, but Cassandra has written this book so well for us older people. There was some bits that some readers may be grossed out by or uncomfortable (don’t wanna give any spoilers) but I got over It. Overall this was a great read that many Paranormal/ Fantasy fanatics would love. I really wanted a little more romance in the books from Jace and Clary because I’m a sucker for a good romance book however I did enjoy reading the books.
